Major Assignments:
Political Speech Analysis:Choose a political speech and evaluate that speech using the criteria established by Orwell in his essay "Politics and the English Language." Then, analyze the writing (rhetoric and style) of the speech. Ultimately, you must make a judgement of the speech's effectiveness. Length - limited to two pages, single-spaced, TNR, 12 pt.
Grading Requirements for Analytical Writing Assignments:
- Follows directions of assignment by thoughtfully and analytically considering the assigned topic
- Provides an original and analytical thesis
- Organizes paper in a coherent and logical manner
- Explores topic via original assertions, claims, and ideas
- Sufficient use of detail to support assertions, claims, and ideas
- MLA format – typed, TNR, 12 pt font, proper heading
- Use of active voice verbs and descriptive language to emphasize ideas
- Use of appropriate English language mechanics and grammar
